(Update) Takedown Part 7 – Escape Velocity (7 pages)

This installment is coming together very quickly. I just finished the pencils, and inking should go quickly. The keynote on this one is simplicity of presentation, and if possible a homage of Wally Wood inks, if I can manage it. Ink the lines and swash on a little light gray highlights, aaaaand its done. Probably in one week, just in time for Thanksgiving. The more color, the longer it takes. This one is going quick. After this installment (part seven) the only thing left to complete for issue Six is one epilogue, “Dinner with the Family.”

You can read past intallments of Takedown with Japan’s Greatest Ninja here for free on this page.

(NEW) COVER for OBERON DESTROYERS: TAKEDOWN, Issue 6 of 12

TakedownCOVER_FNL
You can find the story (26 pages, up to part 5) here on this page (Free) Issue 6 – TakeDown

STYLE
Cover is a tribute to all the old cover artists of the Shadow by Maxwell Grant and others in pulp magazines of the 1930, which somehow works with the Japanese ad copy. I also surprised myself with all the Kaluta and Wrightston style touches. I first encountered their Shadow when I was eight (40 years ago). I loved their horror style on the Shadow, mixed with crime drama and pulp heroics.

TAKEDOWN CHAPTERS
Five chapters have already been completed (26 pages so far). Three more chapters left – I have been telling the story in a series of 4-8 page installments. I created a new page to group the entire story in one place for easy viewing. Please see here.

STORY
The Quiet Ninja is Japan’s Greatest Ninja and a key player in the secret Occult Wars. He is puritanical in his desire to destroy occult villains that seek to gain the upper hand against humans through sorcery and hocus pocus (see previous issues). His family has been on the frontline of this war for 2000 years. This issue is all action, and gets pretty bloody. Most of the story is silent action sequences with little or no dialogue.

Enjoy,
-B.

(NEW) UPDATE – JOEY and KEN – WARNING – SHARED WORLD ALERT

UPDATE – 1.19.15 11:20 PM – Pages are done, just need to paste word balloons. WIll post In 12 hours.

12FacesKENTARO01 UDATE – 01.16.15 Joey and Ken: The Ninja in the Room (4 pages) is almost finished. However, I am stuck waiting on a delivery of art supplies – brush pens for gray tones, to replace my 12 pen set (fancy art supplies, $50), that all went dry at the same time. Running Late. Tick Tock, Mr. Online delivery service. Should be posted on this site by Monday. I already inked and gray toned most of the four pages, but I am stuck needing two tones “in the mail” Script is edited and formatted. Should be quick once I have those pens. And it looks really good.

UPDATE – 01.16.15 WARNING – SHARED WORLD ALERT Except for stories taking place prior to 1940, all comics on this site are one big story. Everything matches up with everything else, so if you feel like you are missing some key information, feel free to dive into other issues for the answer. Characters are consistent from beginning to end, and these comics are not “stream of conciousness.” In “Joey and Ken,” they talk about the Quiet Ninja XXIII, because he will be joining the Project Oberon team two issues from now. You have free access to 5 issues and additional strips (about 150 pages) about the Oberon Destroyers right here on this site (Free Sample PDF and Webcomics), so you have a half of what you need to figure out the big mysterious reveal soon to come. The subtext of the dialogue is pregnant with clues. Actually, I have dropped major burning clues in plain sight in all the issues, that build to some pretty huge reveals in a few months. The Seige of Sacramento will occur. I put my three main characters in one room for the first time in issue 7 (next issue is 6). Most of the dialogue for issue 7 was written 2 years ago. I am adding new material to the story, but the plot, mission statement, character arcs, and overall game plan has not changed.

Enjoy! -B.

2015newyearPromo3Faces12facesJOEY0112facesNINJAface12FacesPRINCECROWAgentDeathray02roguesgallery KEN_SecretFNL Joey and Kentaro, “The NInja in the Room” is the second of my webcomics (4 pages) featuring a conversation between two of my main characters from Oberon Destroyers. My workspeed is speeding up after the last two installments, so I would say – I think I can post it in one week (January 14). Script is finished, pencils are almost finished, so just inks and scan and  “Bob’s your uncle.” In one week. The topic of conversation? Joey and Ken talk about the Ninja based on completely 3rd hand information. It’s my tribute to Social Media where many people use the freedom of speech to talk about things they really don’t know that much about. It’s also a humor piece, with many fun quips by Joey in between amazing flights of creative English by Ken. It’s also a great way to introduce more information about Japan’s Greatest Ninja without committing to any it (he’s a man of mystery, right?). Mostly its my way of exploring the characters of Joey and Kentaro. Teaser Quote – “Small Dick Disorder is not just a straight male disease, Ken. All men are in this together.” Soon!! Thanks, -B.

whew. I actually threw the latest Kentaro and Joey pages together in five days, despite health issues, from a script I wrote right after the Sacramento Comic Con last March (2014). It does feel like me in Sacramento after returning from Japan after 14 years in Tokyo.  It’s also a welcome opportunity to spend some time with Kentaro and Joey, walking the dog. I love both these guys. WIth their funny English from different sides of the ocean. This is definitely in the HUMOR column. And yes, sometimes they really do talk like that in California! WARNING — all characters are in continuity with the Oberon Destroyers 12 issues series, in particular, issue 3 (JUMP TEST) I am a very intent filled plotter, so there are some big surprises coming soon, especially concerning Kentaro, Our Man From TEPCO, which may contain spoilers, so let’s keep it between you and me, OK? “Loose lips sink ships.” Previous webcomics featuring Ken, Joey and Agent Deathray posted below. Deathray – Red Herring or the enemy who walks among us? Click to enlarge, after the  advertisement.

(new) Oberon Destroyers – UPDATE – Kentaro and Joey

I am starting work TOMORROW on the drawings for UNDERSTUDIES and COVER BANDS, a series of four webcomics with a character closeup on Joey and Kentaro. 6 panels per page, two pages on one toasty JPEG. The script was written and edited two months ago. Things get busy. Look for it in a week. I shall try by Tuesday, October 14, next week.

(NEW) Miss Fury Side By Side Comparisons

Brian and Tarpe Mills – Side by Side Comparison.

See? She is never far from my mind.
BlackFuryCOMPARE01

These are side by side comparisons of Miss Fury by Tarpe Mills, and my adaption – Miss Fury Liberated, 1938. In US Copyright Office papers, I gave Tarpe Mills a half credit for story, beats, composition and design. This counts as a derivative work making use of material from the public domain, well within the law.

But you have to draw it yourself. You have to spend the hours and hours getting it right. You have to draw two dozen sketches to get one panel, and these pages took me a week to draw (12 panels). People see the human hand in the drawing. They know digital when they see it.

CREDITS AND (C)
Black and White Pages you see here by me are © Brian McNally. Color pages from the collection Tarpe Mills Miss Fury, Sensational Sundays 1941-1944, edited by Trina Robbins, published by IDW, now on sale. Pick it up!!!

No Tricks, No Tracing paper (don’t like the texture), No Xerox Copy machines.
Open attribution to the true source, Tarpe Mills. Adaption, not a copy, because I changed half of what I found in Tarpe Mills’ work.

This sequence is a good example of what I mean by “half Tarpe Mills, half me.”

BlackFuryCOMPARSON02

I  wish I had time to do more Black Fury comics, but I can try and upload more from the sketchbook..  IF you are mad about Black Fury and want to see more, please email me with one sentence – “Please!! More Black Fury!! More Miss Fury!!! wallykhanofmars@yahoo.com
